hurricane katrina update

The many systems MCIS has deployed along the path Hurricane Katrina took across South Florida were virtually unaffected by the event. One closely monitored 90 Mbps link had less than 15 error seconds and zero severely error seconds in the month that Katrina struck. This equates to system performance in excess of six - nines (99.9999%) reliability during hurricane conditions.

MCIS systems in the City of Key West, the City Boca Raton, the Village of Wellington, U.S. Sugar Corporation and FDOT’s 130 miles of microwave communications from Key West to Florida City all reported virtually no impact on performance during the event. The wireless links associated with these systems remained operational during hurricane force winds. With a reported reliability averaging 99.999%, the owners are reaping the benefits of expertly engineered wireless systems.

Last year, MCIS systems were at ground zero during several of the four hurricanes to strike the region. One system was in a zone that suffered 160 MPH wind gust during hurricane Charley. Among the score of systems designed by MCIS, we have not experienced a destroyed system the last two years and have only had to realign three links that were blown off their optimal alignments.

“The importance of engineering wireless systems is paramount to performance and reliability,” said Rue Hestand, President of MCIS, Inc. “Our company’s engineering approach to delivering microwave communication systems enables our clients to have confidence in the reliability of their communication systems.”
